The new Bandit 650 comes with an all-new engine designed to deliver broad, responsive, smooth power and torque in the real world.
The new engine delivers a balance of power and torque with smooth, refined throttle response. Specifically designed for the Bandit, the new liquid-cooled engine not only makes more power, but also is more efficient and cleaner running.
Oversquare bore and stroke of 65.5 x 48.7mm with a bore/stroke ratio of 0.744:1. A symmetrical cylinder layout, with centered cam drive and tighter spacing between the outside pairs of cylinders, to reduce cylinder head width. Double overhead camshafts acting directing on bucket tappets, for smoother running and more positive valve actuation at high rpm. Four valves per cylinder, each set at a narrow 17- degree angle in a compact combustion chamber, for better breathing. An aluminum-alloy cylinder block, the cylinder bores plated with Suzuki's own tough, race-proven nickel-phosphorous-silicon-carbide coating known as Suzuki Composite Electrochemical Material, or SCEM, to improve heat transfer and ring seal while reducing blowby and mechanical losses.
Lightweight high-compression pistons carry three rings each, the upper compression and oil control rings on each piston electro- plated with a chrome-nitride coating applied in a vacuum chamber using a physical vapor deposition (PVD) system. The chrome-nitride PVD coating is harder and smoother than conventional chrome plating, reducing friction and improving cylinder sealing.
The transmission shafts are staggered vertically to reduce engine length front-to-rear, and a more powerful, more compact and lighter generator is mounted on the left end of the crankshaft to reduce mechanical losses. The number of poles in the generator has been increased from 12 to 20, increasing output despite the generator's smaller size and lighter weight. A six-speed transmission works with a new hydraulic clutch.
The digital Suzuki Dual Throttle Valve (SDTV) fuel injection system is an example of the application of high-quality, advanced high-performance technology to the middleweight class. Each 36mm throttle body carries two butterfly valves, a primary valve opened by the rider using the twist grip and a secondary valve incrementally opened or closed by the engine management computer to maintain the optimum intake air velocity for efficient cylinder filling and combustion ad smoother power delivery, based on engine rpm, primary throttle valve position and gear selection.
An automatic Idle Speed Control (ISC) system regulates the amount of air fed through the throttle body idle circuits, producing a stable idle while improving cold starting and reducing emissions immediately after start-up.
Suzuki's built-in PAIR (Pulsed-AIR) system is controlled by the engine management computer and injects fresh air from the airbox into the exhaust ports, igniting unburned hydrocarbons. The stainless steel exhaust system is fitted with an oxygen sensor to allow the engine management system to monitor combustion efficiency and adjust the fuel injection as needed, and the larger-diameter, shorter muffler carries a catalyst.
All combined, the control systems reduce hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide emissions. The 2007 Suzuki Bandit 650 meets tough Euro 3 emissions standards, and is the cleanest-running middleweight Suzuki motorcycle ever built.
The Bandit 650S comes with an attractive, efficient half-fairing featuring integrated, stacked high and low-beam halogen line beam headlights. A streamlined sport cover integrates the Bandit 650's traditional round halogen multi-reflector headlight with the speedometer and tachometer module, and a sculpted cover fits between the steering head and the fuel tank.
On both versions, the analog tachometer is complemented by an LCD digital speedometer along with an LCD fuel gauge and clock. Neutral position, oil pressure and high beam LED and water temperature indicator lights are set into the face of the speedometer, while LED turn signal indicator lights are positioned below the tachometer and speedometer, on the face of the instrument module. The turn signs feature clear lenses and orange bulbs.
For both models, the frame itself is color- coordinated to match the fuel tank and other body parts, with sleek, contrasting side covers.
Tuned Chassis And Suspension
The double-cradle tubular steel frame has larger-diameter downtubes and 10% greater torsional rigidity, tuned to work with the new Bandit’ s smoother power and torque output. Wheelbase is 1,470mm with rake and trail of 26 degrees and 108mm.
Front forks feature 41mm stanchion tubes with a full 130mm of front wheel travel; fork spring preload can be adjusted to suit varying loads and rider preferences. The rear suspension system uses a single rear shock working with a progressive, rising-rate link system designed to respond smoothly to small road irregularities as well as larger bumps, with ample rear wheel travel. Rear shock rebound damping and spring preload are adjustable. Cast aluminum wheels measure 3.50 x 17-inches in the front and 5.00 x 17-inches in the rear, with a 120/70ZR17M/C (58W) radial front tyre and a 160/60ZR17M/C (69W) radial rear tyre. A convenient center stand is standard equipment.
Adjustable Seat, Handlebars And Controls
The Bandit 650's handlebar position can be adjusted forward or rearward by 10mm, and a clever system of reversible spacers allows seat height to raised or lowered by 20mm.
Four-position adjustability allows the clutch lever and the front brake lever to be moved closer to or farther from the handlebars, to suit the rider's preference.
The Bandit 650's fully-floating dual front brake discs measure 310mm in diameter and work with opposed-four-piston calipers. The single rear brake disc measures 240mm and also carries a dual-piston caliper.
The Bandit 650S is available with digitally controlled ABS, and pride of ownership comes standard with both the 2007 Bandits. Two versions of a remarkably versatile motorcycle, delivering high style, high value, high performance and smooth power delivery.
